Cleanings

A patient in Bella Vista wears a blue shirt and enjoys a teeth cleaning.

Tartar, or calculus, is a hard, fossil-like substance that builds on your teeth over time. Everyone misses a little plaque and food when they brush. Your saliva contains calcium, phosphorus, and several other minerals that turn that leftover plaque into a rock-hard piece that sticks strongly to the tooth and requires professional removal. Some people are born with good teeth, have immaculate home care, and build tartar very slowly. These people are few and far between. They can go years without seeing the dentist, and come out with a clean bill of health. "No cavities!" they say as they skip out of the dentist's office, usually to their spouse or parent. Others brush and floss like madmen and still have cavities or gum disease at every appointment. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. It has been suggested that you should visit the dentist every 6 months for exams and cleanings, but we here at At Ease Dental know that is hogwash. Every person is unique, and their experience with dental disease is also unique, so a one-size-fits-all-approach is never going to work. Everyone builds tartar, and even the cleanest mouths should have their teeth professionally cleaned at least every 18-24 months. If you have a family or personal history of periodontal disease or high numbers of cavities, every six months may not be often enough. For those with high numbers of cavities, bone loss, and dry mouth, a more appropriate schedule may be every 2-3 months. It depends on your personal situation. We at At Ease Dental strive to build plans for our patients that are personalized to their needs. Not everyone in Bella Vista needs to see us every 6 months, but some need to see us every 3. We tailor our care for you
