Flouride:
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that plays a key role in maintaining the hard structure of tooth enamel and dentin. Fluoride strengthens enamel, and is antibacterial. For many decades topical fluoride has been demonstrated as a safe and effective means for reducing the number of cavities people develop. It is a cost-effective method for slowing down or stopping cavities dead in their tracks. But much like sealants, many insurance companies only pay for the treatment for minors. When was the last time you heard that cavities stop magically at 18 years old? They don't, and neither should you. Topical fluoride varnish is a safe and effective treatment for stopping cavities before they start, and is great for any age.
Silver Diamine Fluoride:
Sometimes, small cavities can start in hard to reach places. Sometimes they start on baby teeth that will be lost in the next year or two. Sometimes they start in a senior citizen who is experiencing dry mouth due to their medications. Either way, it may be more beneficial to place a newly developed varnish that is over 90% effective at stopping small cavities if used every 6 months (Journal of Dentistry V.40 Is.11 Nov 2012.) Silver Diamine Fluoride is a wonderful treatment for children and geriatric patients, and is trauma free. No shot, no fillings. But it does come with one drawback. It stains the cavity black. This means that it is a great treatment for those back teeth that may have a little cavity starting, and are far back enough that they will not be seen by anyone but your dental professionals
