Sealants are a plastic coating that helps cover a portion of your tooth. Most people have deep pits and grooves in the chewing surfaces of their teeth that are impossible to clean out. A sealant placed over these surfaces helps protects those areas from getting more "crud" in them, and slows down the decay process. This is a very common procedure for children. But because insurance does not cover this procedure for adults, many people do not have them placed. The last time Dr. Coon checked, he still loved eating Reece's Peanut Butter Cups and didn't stop when he turned 18. So, if we see deep grooves in your teeth, don't be surprised if we suggest a protective coating on them to prevent cavities from developing.
